The third largest Roman amphitheater in the world, after the Colosseum in Rome and the one in Capua. At El Jem, you're not just visiting a ruin — you descend into the undergrounds where gladiators and beasts waited, you walk on the arena sand, and you see up close some of the finest Roman mosaics ever created. A half-day of immersion, in the morning.
Our El Jem experience is different from regular tours. Most excursions stop for 30 minutes for an exterior photo and leave. With us, you take your time: full visit of the amphitheater (stands, arena, panoramic access to the top), descent into the gladiator undergrounds (forbidden on some group tours), then the archaeological museum of El Jem.
The museum alone is worth the trip. It houses one of the world's finest collections of Roman mosaics — some cover entire rooms, in perfect condition. You can get within centimeters to appreciate the detail, which is impossible in major European museums.
Our guide tells you the vivid history of El Jem: the games, the gladiators, the fall of the empire, the legend of Kahina the Berber queen who supposedly defended the city against the Arab invasion. You leave with deep understanding of Roman Tunisia, not just pretty photos.
