Things to Do in Monastir: the Essentials
Monastir has something the big resort towns have lost: a real city, a real history, a fishing harbour, and the sea everywhere you look. We live and work here, so here is our honest take on what is worth your time, and what we recommend to our travellers.
1. The Ribat of Monastir
This is THE landmark of the town: an 8th-century fortress looking out over the sea. You climb up the watchtower for a wonderful view over the harbour and the old cemetery. Film buffs will recognise it, since several movies were shot here. Give yourself about an hour for the visit.
2. The Habib Bourguiba Mausoleum
Right next door stands the imposing mausoleum of Tunisia's first president, with its golden domes and two minarets. The avenue leading up to it is striking. Entry is free and it is well worth a look, even a quick one.
3. The Marina and the Harbour
In the late afternoon, the marina is the place to settle in: a coffee facing the boats, golden light on the water. This is also where the boats leave for the Kuriat Islands.
4. The Kuriat Islands
If you were only to do one trip out of Monastir, this would be it. A marine reserve an hour away by boat, incredible turquoise water, sea turtles, and dolphins along the way. We put together a full guide here.
5. The Medina and the Market
Smaller and quieter than the one in Sousse, the medina of Monastir is easy to wander through without being hassled. It is perfect for strolling, picking up a few spices or a handmade souvenir.
6. The Beaches
Monastir and the Skanes area line up lovely sandy beaches. The water is calm here, good for families. For something wilder, the Kuriat Islands are the way to go.
7. A Trip into the Sahara
From Monastir, the desert is within reach for a day trip. In one day you head out to Matmata and its cave dwellings; in two days you push on to the Ksar Ghilane oasis and a night in a Berber camp. See our guide to the Tunisian Sahara.
8. El Jem, the Colosseum of Africa
Less than an hour's drive away, the Roman amphitheatre of El Jem, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is one of the best preserved in the world. You can go down into the gladiators' underground passages. Half a day is enough.
9. Sidi Bou Said and Tunis
A little further north, the famous blue and white village perched above the Mediterranean, often combined with the Tunis medina and the site of Carthage. A lovely day of culture.
10. Friguia Park
Between Sousse and Hammamet, this wildlife park is a big hit with children: safari, African animals, shows. Perfect for a family outing.
