Tunisian Sahara tour: 1 or 2 days?
The desert is not just a postcard: it is a silence, a light, a starry night you never forget. From the coast (Sousse, Monastir, Hammamet), the Tunisian South is closer than you might think. Here is how to choose your tour and what to expect, explained simply.
1 day or 2 days: which one to choose?
This is the first question to ask yourself, and the answer depends mostly on how much time you have and what you are looking for.
The Sahara in 1 day
A long day (early departure, late return) to get a real taste of the South: Matmata and its cave dwellings, the Star Wars sets, the Ksar Ghilane oasis, a camel ride and a Berber lunch. Perfect if you only have one day to spend in the desert.
The Sahara in 2 days / 1 night
The full version, and honestly the most memorable. We take our time: El Jem along the way, the cave dwellings, the Ksar Ghilane oasis, a quad ride at sunset over the dunes, then a night at a Berber camp under the stars. The next day, Tataouine and the hilltop villages of Chenini. If you can free up two days, this is the one we recommend.
What do you see in the Tunisian desert?
- Matmata: the cave village carved into the rock, famous for its underground houses.
- The Star Wars sets: the region served as the planet Tatooine, and some sets are still there.
- Ksar Ghilane: an oasis in the middle of the desert, with its natural hot spring where you can bathe.
- The ksour: these fortified Berber granaries, like those at Tataouine and Chenini, are spectacular.
- The camel and the quad: two ways to experience the dunes, either one or both on the 2 day package.
What to pack?
- Light clothing for the day, but also a jacket: nights in the desert are cool, even in summer.
- Closed, comfortable shoes (the sand, the walking).
- Sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat or a chèche (desert scarf).
- A flashlight and some cash for extras.
- Your camera: the sunsets over the dunes are well worth it.
What is the best season?
The desert can be visited all year round, but comfort changes a lot from month to month. From March to May and from September to November, temperatures are ideal. Summer (July and August) is very hot during the day: it is doable, but we leave early and stay hydrated. In winter, the days are mild and the nights cold (bring warm clothes for the camp).
How much does it cost?
Sahara rates depend on the number of participants, the package (1 or 2 days) and your city of departure. Since every group is different, we set a fair price on a case by case basis: the price is on request, so contact us on WhatsApp with your dates and the number of people, and we will reply within minutes with the detailed itinerary and the price.
Frequently asked questions
Yes, the South is far from the coast: the day starts early and ends late. That is the price to pay to see the real desert. The 2 day package spreads out the driving better and makes the trip more enjoyable.
For the long Sahara drives, we recommend from about 6 years old. Children's rates apply up to 12 years old.
The Berber camp is simple but comfortable: tents, a hot meal, sanitary facilities. It is an authentic experience, not a hotel, and that is exactly what makes it unforgettable.
