Douz, gateway to the Sahara

By the Wonders of Tunisia team · Local guides, Sousse
Golden sand dunes of Douz with palm trees on the horizon, gateway to the Sahara

Douz is the last town before the dunes. Beyond it, there is only the Grand Erg Oriental — a sea of sand that stretches into Libya. This is where the Mrazig nomads have always stopped, where a camel market still takes place every Thursday, where the Tunisian Sahara begins. Not a postcard Sahara, but one of earth, wind and sun, inhabited by people who know it better than anyone.

Why Douz is the gateway

Geographically, Douz marks the end of the steppe and the start of the erg. To the north, palm groves and arid but cultivated land. To the south, the first dunes of the Grand Erg Oriental, rising gradually until they become an unbroken sea of sand. Douz is the last equipped town — with hotels, shops, a bus station — before the Saharan void.

That position has made it a crossroads throughout history. Caravans stopped here before or after crossing the desert. The Mrazig nomads came to trade livestock and dates. Today it is the starting point for most Saharan excursions in Tunisia: camel treks, 4x4 rides, camp nights in the dunes, and the road to Ksar Ghilane.

The Thursday market

Every Thursday morning the Douz souk comes alive. You find everything — spices, dates, fabrics, pottery, leather, farm tools. And in a separate enclosure, the camel market. This is not a tourist show: real herders come to buy, sell and negotiate dromedaries. Prices are haggled over, animals are inspected, and handshakes seal the deals.

The market is noisy, dusty, colourful. You pass women in melhafa, shepherds in burnous, traders with their pick-up trucks. It is the real life of southern Tunisia, unfiltered.

Desert traditions

The Mrazig are one of the last semi-nomadic tribes in Tunisia. Historically they lived from camel herding, date harvesting and caravan trade. Today most are settled in and around Douz, but the nomadic culture persists: the hospitality, the mint tea brewed in the sand, the traditional songs and dances, the intimate knowledge of the desert.

Some families offer guided camel treks and camp nights. It is a way of keeping a skill alive while earning a living. The quality of the experience depends on the guide — a real local cameleer will show you things no packaged tour can.

The Festival of the Sahara

Every December, Douz hosts the International Festival of the Sahara, one of the oldest cultural festivals in Tunisia. For several days, horsemen, camel riders and artists from across the Sahara gather for camel races, fantasias, traditional dances, poetry and craft exhibitions.

The festival draws Tunisians and visitors alike. It is a strong moment, both popular and authentic, even if it has modernised a little over the years. The atmosphere around the campfires at night, with music and tea, remains unforgettable.

Excursions from Douz

Douz is the base camp for exploring the Tunisian Sahara. Options include:

🐪 Local guide tip: if you come to Douz on a Thursday, get up early and go to the camel market before 9 am — that is when the atmosphere is most intense. And for a camel ride, ask for a local guide rather than a hotel package — you will see the real desert, not the shortened version.

Practical tips

Getting there

Douz is reachable by car from Sousse in about 5 hours, via Kairouan and Gafsa or via Gabès. From Tozeur, allow 1 hour 30 minutes crossing the Chott el Jerid. Buses and shared taxis (louages) also run from larger cities, though schedules are irregular.

Frequently asked questions

Is the camel market real or for tourists?

Real. These are genuine herders buying and selling dromedaries. Tourists are welcome but it is not a show put on for them.

When is the Festival of the Sahara?

Usually late December, but exact dates change each year. Check in advance, and book accommodation early — hotels fill up fast.

Can you sleep in the desert from Douz?

Yes, and it is one of the best ways to experience the Sahara. Several local operators offer one- or two-night camps in the dunes, with meals and transport included.

Do you need a 4x4 to get to Ksar Ghilane?

Yes, the track is sandy. A normal car will not make it. Organised excursions include transport by off-road vehicle.
